Nació el 28 de marzo de 1986 en el hospital Lenox Hill, en Manhattan, Nueva York.

Hija mayor de Cynthia Louise Bissett, y el empresario Joseph Anthony Germanotta, Jr. Su padre dirigía una compañía que instalaba wifi en hoteles, y su madre fue vicepresidenta de la operadora de móviles Verizon. Gaga tiene ascendencia italiana y francocanadiense, y una hermana llamada Natali, nacida en 1992.

Creció en el exclusivo Upper East Side de Manhattan en el seno de una familia católica y estudió en el colegio El Sagrado Corazón, como Paris Hilton.
